Melcrum study on Social Media and being in London again.
Last Wednesday I was in London for the Social Media Forum for Internal Communicators, speaking on behalf of my employer IBM. Here's a little overview of things I took with me from that day...
Melcrum released the results of their global survey on the use of blogs, wikis, podcasts and so on in the context of internal communications. I was amazed to read that more than half of the respondents to their survey were already using internal blogs or where planning to do so in the next 12 months.
Also popular is online video (63%), one of the applications I covered when talking about IBM's internal Innovation video contest. 3D web tools are still not on the mind of internal communicators although the time that we will have internal corporate virtual worlds is not that far off if you ask me.
But my stay in London also allowed me to meet up again with people like Debbie Weil, my partner in crime for the China Blogging Tour, Neville Hobson whom I keep bumping in and Adriana Cronin-Lukas, my favourite "corporate anarchist" (hope you like this one Adriana ;-)
I had time to chat with Debbie about our tour and we exchanged some insights about the conference. Debbie spoke the 2nd day about CEO Blogging, unfortunately I needed to get back to Brussels for some more work and a debate on PR/Media and ethics, organised by the association of IT journalists here in Belgium. See Debbie in a 60 second interview on why CEOs should(not) blog.
I scribbled 2 things down when Neville was speaking; a white paper called "From command & control to engage and encourage." (opens a PDF) which I just downloaded now and will read tomorrow and the brand/type of the digital MP3 recorder he uses for on the spot interviews. Maybe I'll buy the same although I am pretty happy with my N93, image and sound at the same time and in pretty good quality.
In the afternoon I met up with Adriana. She kindly invited me to her club in central London. Although the building and the atmosphere was amazing, it was my talk and brainstorm with Adriana which will linger on. I think we understand each other about the use and meaning of what is here called "social media". We're on the same line although she works as an "external influencer" and I try to do the same "from the inside" at IBM. I am certain that we'll post about our common ideas one day.
By the way, here are some of my quotes in The Telegraph, based on what I presented at the conference (thanks Debbie).
