Help, my e-identity (card) can be copied.
Tuesday, August 8, 2006 at 16:57 A security expert warned that a flaw in next-generation electronic passports provided in the U.S., UK, and elsewhere, could enable sensitive personal information to be copied by criminals or hackers. The German security authority briefed those attending the Defcon computer conference, using his own passport as an example. From Newsfactor.
I have my electronic identity card for almost a year now and now I learn it can be copied... Man this is bad news for some companies who have been earning good money with the Belgian government.
Can you imagine the "product recall" scenario in this case ? This would be huge in Belgium where last year in May more than 600.000 e-ID cards had been distributed.
Of course, it is not because someone can "copy" the chip and the info on it that he/she can duplicate a workable card. We still have the pin code... I wonder how companies and Governments involved with electronic ID cards will handle this smoldering crisis on the topic.
Up till now I have not seen any reaction on the website of Zetes (the technology company working on Belgian e-ID cards) nor from the Government.

However the secret and private information can not be copied from the eID card.
Thanks for your comment.
True, the e-ID card has a lot of interesting applications but I still don't feel comfortable that someone can copy my identity card = my identity. Even if it wouldn't be possible to access confidential information.
Now my post comes also from the communications side... Companies like Zetes and organizations like the Government should inform and communicate about this. Already people don't feel that comfortable with info on chips etc...
It is indeed a quite disturbing thought...
