How others see PR and blogging

Jeremiah is a web professional, blogger and podcaster who writes on his blog about several aspects, both business and tech related to his job and his experiences "in the trenches".
What is interesting to see is how he views PR and the relation PR people have with bloggers. In one of his recent posts he mentions Guy Kawasaki's "How to suck up to a blogger" and the reaction of Jeremy Zawodny on this same story.
At a certain point Jeremiah writes about the PR/Blogger relationship as follows: "As a blogger and a human, I dislike being manipulated, but I understand the need."
I think we all do our own PR every day... even without thinking. Are we manipulators then ? I guess we all are in some form. On the other hand I do understand the idea behind this.
PR is about influencing. But I do see a shift in the approach of PR people towards communications. They (we) start to understand that transparency is key and I can tell you that the next generation of PROs will have a different approach than those who started their career 15 years ago.
A change for the good...

After last week, I was wiped out during the weekend, and am now just getting around to feeling better about being in public relations. I mean, it was getting pretty darn depressing. Don't know what I mean? Take a look...

Excellent point. It seems that PR pros, at least in the US, have taken a hit the past week (the tone of strumpette.com being a prime example).

PR is, in a way, manipulation. But, there are other ways to think about it. Though I don't like it, I also see myself as a sales person.

The true sales person doesn't "sell" you anything. He/She simply points out the benefits, provides other information (good and bad, if he's honest), and lets the "customer" make up his/her mind.

That's the same approach we should take with media, bloggers, etc.

And, to do our best, we have to know our "customers" to be able to offer the valuable service we sell: information.

Wonderful write up, thanks!

You've made some good points that may raise questions that can never be answered:

PR is about Influencing?
Is every conversation about selling?
Are all relelationships about manipulation?

Great overview, thanks Philippe
