Reputation Monitoring Dashboard for PR

The beauty of the blogosphere:

Through a link by B.L. Ochman I came upon this very good overview on the topic of Online Reputation Monitoring by Andy Beal. In the comment to the post of Andy I find this link provided by Marshall Kirkpatrick, which brings me to this post and my 2 cents...

Monitor This
is an online tool that allows you to create an OPML file of 22 different search engine feeds.

For PR people (like me) this means that in one single file you can monitor all these search engine results based on your keyword(s)...  No need to create a search string + feed on each and everyone of these search engines. This is all in one.

The service is really easy to use; put in your keyword(s), push the "make monitor OPML" and follow the steps to create your OPML file. Once you have this, import it into your feedreader.

Adding an OPML file
Here's what it gives for my first test. I picked "IBM" as a keyword and generated the OPML file. I imported this into my KlipFolio feedreader.

KlipFolio is the tool I use since it gives me a very easy way to monitor/scan the latest news and also gives me alerts when my keywords are mentioned. Also, I like the dashboard look and feel of it.

The result is a dashboard of search results, generated through the OPML file, changing/updating in real-time. I can preview the content of the results before clicking through to the full story/blog/website.

By the way, KlipFolio has an enormous library of pre-made Klips (feeds) from several main stream media like the BBC, Die Welt etc.. but also feed klips to monitor you inbox, weather and more. It includes images and you can even create your own branded Klip.

So, is this coming close to a real free monitoring dashboard or what ?

Let me know.

Glad you found that useful. I learned about it from Lisa Williams, http://blogs.opml.org/thisislisa - who's very active in the OPML space. I was so excited when she told me about it! One down side appears to be that because some of the engines don't support the use of quotes around phrases, that complicates things a bit. We'll see.

Hi Marshall,

Thanks for your comment.

About teaching RSS - your approach seems to work. I'll test it out during my next training session. I will also try to find something visual - people tend to react better to a drawing than bits and bytes.
