News in 2005: 6 minutes for Congo, 2 for Chechnya

MSF (Medecins Sans Frontieres) reports on the top 10 under-reported stories of 2005. War/conflicts in Chechnya, Congo, Haiti and other "less important" countries have not been covered by major media in comparison with the war in Iraq or the Tsunami disaster.

Below a view on mentions of these countries in the blogopshere through Blogpulse.

For example; on the three major U.S. television networks' nightly newscasts for 2005, only six minutes were devoted to Congo and two minutes to Chechnya. The AIDS crisis received only 14 minutes of coverage...

"Millions of people are struggling through crises in places that rarely, if ever, get mentioned in the U.S. news, and in our experience, silence is the best ally of injustice." according to Nicolas de Torrente, Executive Director of MSF in the United States.

You can watch a Flash presentation on the top 10 stories here. You can support MSF by donating money through their website here.

I am happy to see an "uncle" report about the saddness of under-reported crisis, especially in Congo. I agree with the statement that says that silence is the best friend of injustice. It is sooo true, in so many dmains of life, not just crisis. It's really, really sad!!

Hi Ali and thanks for your comment... I get a strange feeling when being called "uncle", glad you put it between brackets. Yes this is a sad story and it continues; recently we had a rather open exhibit here in Brussels on our sad history in Congo under King Leopold... today it has gone and the museum of the colonies here in Brussels is again telling the embellished story of our crimes... Very sad. But then there is hope; my kid who is 9 gets the real story at school. He knows about the crimes and has a different view than my generation or the one before. All the best.
